Annually, Arataki Rotorua provides approximately 6,000 bee hives for orchard pollination throughout the Bay of Plenty. Each beehive is meticulously checked to ensure it is meets our high standard, and is fit for pollination. This means our dedicated beekeepers check and count frames of brood, frames of bees, food supplies and similarly assess both queen performance and general hive health.
Interestingly a single honey bee colony in the mid to late spring can contain upwards of 34,000 individual bees. Each colony has an active queen which lays approximately 1,500 eggs per day or 10,500 per week! The developing brood requires carbohydrates (nectar), protein (pollen) and water, which is all collected by the worker / foraging bees. The result is the spreading of pollen between flowers and successful pollination.
We encourage greater levels of pollen foraging by feeding sugar syrup which essentially stimulates a nectar flow. This encourages the queen to produce more brood which in turn creates greater demand for pollen – essentially meaning better pollination. We pride ourselves on the both the quality of our beehives and the service we provide.
